In June 2006, following a joint jury trial in the circuit court of Jackson County, defendant John L. Bryant was convicted of first-degree murder (720 ILCS 5/9 — 1(a)(1) (West 2004)) and concealment of a homicidal death (720 ILCS 5/9 — 3.1(a) (West 2004)), and his wife, defendant Lisa Bryant, was convicted of first-degree murder under a theory of accountability (720 ILCS 5/5 — 2(c), 9 — 1(a)(1) (West 2004)).
