Saxe, J.
Since the enactment of the Equitable Distribution Law (Domestic Relations Law § 236 [B]) and the subsequent holding of the Court of Appeals in O’Brien v O’Brien (66 NY2d 576), that professional licenses are marital property, our trial courts have struggled with the complications of distributing the value of a spouse’s professional license and professional practice.
