This appeal raises the question whether the defendant, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company (Liberty Mutual), had a duty to defend the plaintiff in an underlying civil suit arising from allegations of sexual misconduct involving a minor. The plaintiff also alleges that Liberty Mutual is *367liable under G. L. c. 93A, § 9 (1994 ed.),1 for unfair settlement practices in the business of insurance as provided in G. L. c. 176D, § 3 (9) (1994 ed.).2
