SCHROEDER, Circuit Judge.

Johnny B. Milton was convicted in California state court of robbery and attempted murder. After exhausting state collateral remedies, he sought relief in federal court and now appeals the district court’s denial of his petition for a writ of habeas corpus under 28 U.S.C. § 2253.

Milton chose to represent himself rather than be represented by the public defender who, Milton thought, had a conflict of interest. Despite Milton’s and the trial court’s efforts to see that he had resources to assist him in the preparation of his defense, he went to trial without having had…
