Maryland’s Workmen’s Compensation Act, Md. Code (1957, 1979 Repl. Vol.), Art. 101, §§ 1 — 101, effective 16 April 1.914, is designed to protect workers and their families from hardships inflicted by work-related injuries. Edgewood Nursing Home v.
