In mid-December 1986, Wyley Gates was arrested for the shooting deaths of his father, brother, cousin and his father’s girlfriend at their home in the Town of Canaan, Columbia County. Because of the heinous nature of the crimes and the relationship of the accused to the victims, the case immediately attracted widespread public interest and intense news media attention.
