RUDMAN, Justice.

This case is on report pursuant to M.R.Civ.P. 72(c) 1 from the Superior Court (Cumberland County, Scmfley, J.). We are asked whether and under what circumstances a presentence investigation report prepared by the Division of Probation and Parole pursuant to M.R.Crim.P. 32 may be disclosed to persons other than the defendant, the defendant’s attorney, or the prosecuting attorney. We conclude that materials contained in a presentence investigation report are generally confidential. This confidentiality, however, is not absolute.
