Appellant, Belinda Montoya, pled guilty to possession of cocaine and was sentenced to fourteen months in a state jail facility. She appealed, claiming that the trial court erred in failing to sua sponte raise the issue of her competence to stand trial. The court of appeals agreed and abated the trial-court judgment.
