In Commonwealth v. Cuffie, 33 Mass. App. Ct. 212 (1992), the Appeals Court affirmed the defendant’s conviction of trafficking in cocaine in an amount of twenty-eight grams or more and of conspiracy to commit that offense. The Appeals Court rejected the defendant’s claim that a new trial was required because one juror had reported to the judge that another juror had said that she had made an independent visit to the scene of the crime “to check it out.” We granted the defendant’s application for further appellate review.
