OAKES, Circuit Judge:

This appeal involves a question of the vicarious liability of the United States for an automobile accident caused by a civilian employee on temporary assignment away from home. The accident occurred after working hours and after a number of alcoholic drinks, but on the employee’s way back to lodging provided by the Government in a rental car paid for by the Government.
