This is an appeal from a summary judgment the trial court rendered in favor of defendants, The Express-News Corporation and Karen Kennedy, against Shannon Sel-lards, as next friend of her daughter, Darlene Demarais. 1

Darlene Demarais was involved in a one-car accident on February 10, 1983, in which she, as passenger, sustained serious injuries. The driver and another passenger were killed, and a fourth passenger sustained injuries. Karen Kennedy, a police reporter for the defendant newspaper, called in the story to the paper and wrote a follow-up…
