This case which you are trying is one of the most important, ones that has ever been presented to a jury in this county. It has created a great deal of public interest, not only on account of the • peculiar features of it, but from the fact that it has been conducted before you by four men who certainly have not their superiors among us, and one who has a reputation which has become much more extensive than the limits of his own state.
