This court remanded this cause to the circuit court of Cumberland County for a new hearing on defendant’s motion to withdraw his guilty plea after determining that defendant’s attorney had not complied with the certification requirements of Rule 604(d) (134 Ill. 2d R. 604(d)). (People v. Janes (1994), 158 Ill. 2d 27 (hereinafter Janes 1).) Jurisdiction over the direct appeal in this capital case was retained pending the outcome of the remand proceedings.
