MARTIN, Justice.

Plaintiff Triangle Leasing Company, Inc. (hereinafter Triangle) is a North Carolina corporation whose primary business is renting automobiles, trucks, and vans in eastern and central North Carolina. Having opened its doors in the Raleigh area in 1979, the company was ready tp expand to Wilmington by the fall of 1986 and in September of that year hired defendant Robert F. McMahon to manage their new office there.
