Multnomah County Sheriffs Deputy Ezell brought defendant from the Multnomah County courthouse jail to a courtroom for a proceeding in a criminal case. Once inside the courtroom, the deputy removed defendant’s handcuffs and told him to sit in a chair at counsel table and “remain there.” Ezell took a seat farther back in the courtroom. Approximately 35 minutes later, while the judge in the case was speaking from the bench, defendant turned in his chair, jumped up, and started to run toward the door of the courtroom.
