The New York Sex Offender Registration Act (the Act) (L 1995, ch 192 [Correction Law, art 6-C, § 168 et seq.]) became effective January 21, 1996 (L 1995, ch 192, § 3). Modelled after New Jersey’s Megan’s Law, this Act requires that convicted sex offenders register with the appropriate law enforcement agencies. Based on an assessment of risk, information pertaining to this offender may be disseminated by the appropriate law enforcement agencies to the public.
