The Western Oherokees inhabited that portion of the Indian Territory which had been ceded to them by the treaty 1828. They are believed to have been about 6,000 in number, having a governor, a legislative assembly, statute laws, and the autonomy which has been and is now exercised by the different nations in the Territory.
