ELDRIDGE, Judge.

The petitioner, William Calhoun, and a codefendant were indicted for murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and other offenses. The defendants were arraigned in the Circuit Court for Baltimore County on February 10, 1981, pursuant to Maryland Rule 723. Under Code (1957, 1982 Repl.Vol., 1983 Cum.Supp.), Art. 27, § 591, and Rule 746, the 180-day time period for the trial expired on August 9, 1981.1 The *3first scheduled trial date was April 29, 1981, but this was postponed because of Calhoun’s insanity plea and his mental examination at Clifton T.
