This cause was originally brought as a class action for injunctive relief against defendant, alleging that the reduction in the amount of annuity benefits paid to the widows of Chicago firefighters pursuant to the Illinois Pension Code (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1983, ch. 1081/2, par. 1— 101 et seq.), and in reliance upon a municipal ordinance mandating the retirement of firemen at the age of 63, was in violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) (29 U.S.C. §631 et seq.
