HORTON, Judge.
Joe C. Rowe, et al. (collectively, defendants) appeal from a jury verdict and judgment denying them any compensation for 11.411 acres of their land in Catawba County which the Department of Transportation (DOT) condemned on 26 June 1995 for a connector road. Prior to the taking, defendants Joe C. Rowe and wife, Sharon B. *208Rowe (the Rowes), and defendants Howard L. Pruitt, Jr., and wife, Georgia M.
