The defendant, Mélico Butler, was charged with the crimes of robbery in the first degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-134 (a) (2),1 and of being a persistent dangerous felony offender in violation of General Statutes § 53a-40.2 After a jury trial, the defendant was found guilty of the robbery charge and *621pleaded guilty to the charge of being a persistent dangerous felony offender.
