The defendant appeals from the judgment of conviction, rendered after a jury trial, of assault in the first degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-59 (a) (1) and assault in the second degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-60 (a) (2).1 The trial court sentenced the defendant to an effective term of imprisonment of eighteen years, suspended after twelve years, followed by a five year1 probationary period.
