The Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959, commonly called the Landrum-Griffin Act, protects labor union members against discrimination in respect of their rights to nominate candidates and vote in union elections. 29 U.S.C. § 411(a)(1); Calhoon v. Harvey, 379 U.S. 134, 139, 85 S.Ct. 292, 295, 13 L.Ed.2d 190 (1964). This guaranty of equal voting rights is subject, however, to “reasonable rules and regulations” in the union’s constitution and bylaws. Id.
