A proceeding was commenced by the Department of Social Services (department) in the Essex Probate and Family Court to dispense with the need for a mother’s consent to her child’s adoption, G. L. c. 210, § 3. The child, whom we shall call Erica, challenges an order of a judge who concluded that, because Erica’s attorney formerly represented Erica’s *56grandfather in other proceedings, the attorney had a conflict of interest.
