POSNER, Circuit Judge.
This is a habeas corpus action brought by a state prisoner. The state moved to dismiss the case as untimely, but the district court denied the motion, ruling that the statute of limitations had been equitably tolled. The question whether his ruling was correct is presented to us by an interlocutory appeal under 28 U.S.C. § 1292(b). The question has two parts: In what circumstances is the one-year statute of limitations in 28 U.S.C. § 2244(d)(1) for federal habeas corpus proceedings brought by state prisoners subject to the common law doctrine of equitable tolling?
