After a jury trial, petitioner-appellant Dennis Winkfield was convicted in Ohio state court of aggravated murder with a death penalty specification (calling for the death penalty, life in prison without parole, or life with parole after twenty, twenty-five or thirty years) and a firearm specification (calling for a mandatory three-year prison term upon conviction), kidnapping, and gross sexual imposition.
