Defendant was charged by information with theft of an automobile having a value in excess of $150, in violation of section 16 — 1(a) of the Criminal Code of 1961 (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1977, ch. 38, par. 16 — 1(a)). Following a jury trial, defendant was convicted as charged and sentenced to five years imprisonment.
