The defendant, Michael Ruiz, was charged with and convicted of one count of armed robbery (720 ILCS 5/18 — 2(a) (West 1994)), two counts of attempted murder of a police officer (720 ILCS 5/8 — 4, 9 — 1(b)(1) (West 1994)) and two counts of attempted murder (720 ILCS 5/8 — 4, 9 — 1 (West 1994)). The defendant received a sentence of 20 years for armed robbery, 30 years on each of the two attempted murder counts, and 55 years for each count of attempted murder of a police officer.
