This matter arises from a report to the Appeals Court of the propriety of an order of a Superior Court judge denying the defendants’ motion for summary judgment. We allowed the defendants’ application for direct appellate review.2 The plaintiff, alleging that the defendants, the author and the *130publisher of a travel guide, made defamatory statements about him in their guide, commenced a libel action.
