On October 4, 1994, plaintiff Terry G. Lee [Lee] filed suit in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, seeking relief under Title VII, 42 U.S.C. § 2000e et seq., and state law. Lee claimed that in January, 1992, on account of his race and in retaliation for the exercise of rights protected under Title VII, Farmers Group, Inc., and Farmers Insurance Group1 refused to promote him to the position of Service Center Manager in St. Louis, Missouri.
