HIGGINBOTHAM, Circuit Judge:

The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District appeals from a judgment entered against it in this § 1983 action brought by the administratrix of the estate of David Flores, a junior high school student who suffered an injury to his hand in a classroom accident and later committed suicide. A jury found that the school district’s negligence had caused an infringement of Flores’s constitutionally-protected right not to have his bodily integrity impaired by unsafe school conditions, and awarded damages of $550,000.
