WIDENER, Circuit Judge:

Appellants China Steel Corporation and U.S. Steel Mining Company (defendants) appeal from a judgment against them in a maritime action brought under the Death on the High Seas Act, 46 U.S.CApp. §§ 761-768, on behalf of Denzil Pereira, the captain, and four crew members, killed on October 27, 1990 by an explosion on board the M/V Berge Charlotte.
