In this appeal we are asked to decide whether the open meeting law, G. L. c. 39, §§ 23A-23C (1988 ed.),3 *233applies to the Hanover High School principal selection committee (selection committee), which was appointed by the superintendent of schools of Hanover to assist him in nominating candidates for the position of principal of Hanover High School. A judge of the Superior Court concluded that the selection committee was subject to the requirements of the open meeting law and ordered compliance.
