OPINION

MAGNUSON, Chief Justice.

This case concerns the interpretation of Minnesota’s spousal maintenance statutes and the application of these statutes to retirement payments received from pension funds. After respondent Raymond Michael Lee retired, he brought a motion in the district court to modify his monthly maintenance obligation. The court lowered Raymond’s maintenance obligation from $825 per month to $700 per month. *633Raymond appealed, and the court of appeals eliminated his monthly maintenance payments altogether.
