The defendant was charged in the indictment with the crime of murder in the first degree for having with intention and deliberate design killed Minnie Ingersoll by shooting her with a rifle. Being arraigned, he interposed a plea of “not guilty, and insanity,” and, being tried upon the charge, the jury rendered a verdict of murder in the first degree.
