Under date of May 28,1930, F. A. Shafer and his wife, Margaret A. Shafer, executed their joint and several promissory note, in writing, for the sum of five thousand dollars, due on or before five years, payable to the order of Alexander Bremner, the plaintiff in this action. On the same date, Mr. and Mrs. Shafer signed a mortgage upon a tract of land in Ferry county, Mr. Bremner being named as mortgagee, the mortgage reciting that the same was executed as security for the payment of a five thousand dollar note signed by the mortgagors, bearing even date.
