Following a bench trial in the circuit court of Cook County, defendant, Gregory Madej, was convicted of murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1(a)(1)), felony murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1(a)(3)), rape (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 11 — 1), deviate sexual assault (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 11 — 3), and armed robbery (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 18— 2). The circuit court sentenced defendant to death on the murder and felony murder convictions.
