Petitioner Edwin Udey filed suit in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas under the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Udey, a prisoner in the Federal Correctional Institution in Texarkana, asked to be provided with a diet consistent with his sincerely held religious beliefs; he primarily requested organically grown produce washed in distilled water.
