LUCERO, Circuit Judge.
Sarah Metzger participated in a long-term disability plan (“the Plan”) sponsored by her employer, Twin Lakes National Bank, and administered by UNUM Life Insurance Company of America (“UNUM”). The Plan is subject to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (“ERISA”), 29 U.S.C. §§ 1001 et seq. After UNUM denied Metzger’s claim for benefits and affirmed denial in a subsequent administrative appeal, Metzger sought relief in federal district court under ERISA’s civil enforcement provision, 29 U.S.C. § 1132(a)(1).
