In December of 1999, appellant was tried by a general court-martial composed of a military judge sitting alone at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. In accordance with his pleas, he was found guilty of three specifications of unauthorized absence and one specification of wrongful possession of marijuana, in violation of Articles 86 and 112a, Uniform Code of Military Justice, 10 USC §§ 886 and 912a, respectively.
