The respective plaintiffs purchased very simple new houses and lots, each for a consideration in the neighborhood of $4,600, in one of the “Stephenson” subdivisions, Oakland county, Michigan, not far from the city of Detroit. Very shortly thereafter each house showed serious defects due to inferior materials or workmanship, or both. In some, if not all, the roofs leaked, paint peeled off, cellar floors cracked and separated, plumbing appeared defective, et cetera.
