This conviction was for manslaughter, the punishment being two years confinement in the penitentiary. It is disclosed by the record" that John Baker, a widower with several children, the oldest being a girl 13 or 14 years of age, lived in the same neighborhood with a family named Copeland. Among the Copelands was a young man, Gabe Copeland, about 20 years of age, whose attention to'the eldest daughter of Baker was distasteful to her father.
