STEWART, Justice.

William Curtis Cates was convicted by a jury of knowingly or intentionally causing bodily injury to a child in violation of section 22.04 of the Texas Penal Code. TEX. PENAL CODE ANN. § 22.04 (Vernon 1989). At appellant’s election, the trial court assessed punishment, sentencing him to ten years’ confinement in the Texas Department of Corrections and a $2,000 fine.
