This action was brought by plaintiff, E. P. Stevens, against defendants, Thomas M. Storke and C. A. Storke, who were respectively the publisher and editor of “The Daily News and The Independent,” a newspaper published in the city of Santa Barbara, to recover damages for injury to his “reputation and good name as a man and a citizen, and in his business as a contractor for the paving of streets and roads,” and for mental suffering caused by the publication in the said paper of an alleged libelous article of and concerning the plaintiff.
