Defendant, Joseph Hampton, pleaded guilty in the circuit court of Kendall County to two counts of attempted murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1991, ch. 38, pars. 8 — 4(a), 9 — 1(a)(2) (now codified, as amended, at 720 ILCS 5/8 — 4(a), 9 — 1(a)(2) (West 1992))), and one count each of aggravated battery (Ill. Rev.
