On May 12, 1980, in American Export Lines, Inc. v. Alvez, 446 U.S. 274, 100 S.Ct. 1673, 64 L.Ed.2d 284 (1980), the Supreme Court of the United States held that the wife of a longshoreman injured in state territorial waters had a loss of society claim under the general maritime law. Gilberto Alvez, a longshoreman, lost his right eye due to an accident aboard a vessel within the territorial waters of New York.
