COX, Judge:

Appellant was tried by a general court-martial composed of members and a military judge at the United States Naval Station, Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines, during May and June 1981. Contrary to his pleas, he was found guilty of an unauthorized absence of 20 days and two specifications of perjury, in violation of Articles 86 and 131, Uniform Code of Military Justice, 10 U.S.C. §§ 886 and 931, respectively. He was sentenced to a bad-conduct discharge, confinement at hard labor for 1 year, total forfeitures, and reduction to the lowest enlisted pay grade.…
