On February 21, 2003, appellant John Walter Moore was found guilty of first-degree assault in violation of Minn.Stat. § 609.221, subd. 1 (2004) (great bodily harm), and third-degree assault in violation of Minn.Stat. § 609.223, subd. 1 (2004) (substantial bodily harm), in connection with an incident involving his girlfriend, Joyce Catchings.
