For several years prior to July, 1914, William Hastie Smith, Jr., & Co., a firm of stock brokers in the City of Philadelphia, had carried an account with one Herman Berberich. The firm from time to time purchased stocks and bonds on the latter’s order, advancing their own' money for that purpose and charging him with the amount so advanced, plus their regular commission and interest.
