After a jury trial in the Superior Court, the defendants were convicted of assault with intent to murder (G. L. c. 265, § 15), mayhem (G. L. c. 265, § 14), assault with intent to rob (G. L. c. 265, § 20), and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (G. L. c. 265, § 15A). In addition, Walmsley was convicted of assault with intent to rape (G. L. c. 265, § 24). The defendants’ appeals r,aise discrete issues. *
